The Rough Places Plain

A few words from Handel’s Messiah, suitably modified for 21st century Americans:

---

"The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness; prepare ye the way of the Oil; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

He without the Automobile was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgressions of Thy people was he stricken. He was despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. All they that see him laugh him to scorn; they shoot out their lips, and shake their heads, saying: "He trusted in Sunshine that it should deliver him; let it deliver him, if he delight in walking.

Why do the nations so furiously rage together, and why do the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth rise up, and the rulers take counsel together against the Sun, and for the anointed Oil.

Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their yokes from us.

Thus saith the Sun, the Sun of hosts: Yet once a little while and I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. And I will shake all nations; and the desire of all nations shall come.

Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Victory in battle is swallowed up in Death." Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped. He that dwelleth in Heav'n shall laugh them to scorn; The Sun shall have them in derision.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way. The people that walked in darkness have burned a great light; and they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people; but the Sun shall arise upon thee, and Its glory shall be shined upon thee.

For unto us a Hope is born, unto us a Sun is given, and the government shall be upon Its shoulder. Its yoke is easy, and Its burden is light. And the glory of the Sun shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the truth of the Angels of the Air have spoken it.

Every valley, Every valley

Shall be exalted
Shall be exalted
Shall be exalted

And every mountain and hill made low
The crooked straight, and the rough places plain
The crooked straight, the crooked straight, and the rough places plain
And the rough places plain

Every valley, Every valley

Shall be exalted
Shall be exalted
Shall be exalted

And every mountain and hill made low
The crooked straight, and the rough places plain
The crooked straight, the crooked straight, and the rough places plain
And the rough places plain"
