Tumeric Milk/Golden Milk

Warm Up With a Mug of Tasty Turmeric Milk (Plus it’s Good For You!)

" Turmeric has become an important herbal ally in recent years, especially for those who have excess inflammation, such as arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome or old sports injuries. Turmeric root is in the same family as the more commonly found ginger and is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory. One problem is that curcumin, the main compound in turmeric that gives it these benefits, isn’t easily absorbed by the body. Luckily, that is an easy fix, as the piperine in black pepper makes it more bioavailable."

Turmeric milk (also called golden milk) is a staple of Ayurvedic medicine and is a great way to get a dose of turmeric.

While I've never had it in milk, turmeric has been very helpful for me. I stumbled onto it by accident after eating turmeric in my food several days in a row. The pain from tendinitis was just gone, so I reviewed what I'd eaten, then experimented with strings of days not eating turmeric followed by strings of days eating it. No doubt about it, turmeric really helps my tendinitis. As soon as I learned pepper increases its affect I made sure to add pepper most times.

I ask anyone who lives where you can grow turmeric to consider doing so. If you cannot find roots to start, I offer to help you with that if you live where I could mail them to you.

You must be growing turmeric and ginger in pots? If growing outside needs to be in shade as it is a forest floor plant. In a warm climate takes about 2 years to have a good bed.

No, I'm not growing turmeric at all. When I looked into it, it seemed winter was a big impediment. It needs warmer winters. I'd grow it if I could, as it has become important to me. It would be good if I could buy turmeric that is at least grown on this continent. That's why I'd like to see others--like in your climate, Blueberry-- begin to grow it. As far as I know, the turmeric roots or powder I buy are all imported.

I moved this thread to the "GW Book of Herbal Lore" since it is health knowledge specific to a certain herb. Does sound useful though, worth adding to the herb garden.

Fats consumed with turmeric (ideally cooked into the fat) will also significantly increase the absorption of the curcumin

Oh, I did not know that, but turmeric kind of diffuses and spreads throughout the food when there is fat in the food. When powdered, it's hydrophobic, so this really is the best way. One of the ways I often use it is in an omelet or scrambled eggs. To incorporate the powdered turmeric into egg, I first put a teaspoon of oil in a bowl, then I add the turmeric and ground black pepper to the oil, stir it up, to "wet" the turmeric, and finally add the egg.

Sauces with fat are a good place to slip in some turmeric. My husband makes a beautiful yellow rice with turmeric, I think adding butter as it cooks. An easy way to add turmeric to a sandwich is to stir it into mayonnaise.

Occasionally when I think I've gone without turmeric for too long I will prepare it as for incorporating it into and egg, but then I just take a spoonful directly. Come to think of it, I do follow that up with milk to wash it down.

The picture is the yield out of a 3 gal pot using peat and perlite. Grows best in full shade, direct sun does a number on the plants. Sorry no pictures of it growing have no idea were they are. The harvest was used to start beds growing in different places in order to find the perfect growing conditions.

It looks so plump, crisp and clean. How long ago did you re-plant around your property? Hope you have abundant production from it all. Do you know how long these rhizomes were in the soil?

The ones in the picture have now been in the ground app 15 months. I will probably start to dig some in the next 2 weeks. Drop me a note and if they are first quality a package will be in the mail. Also have some ginger would you like some?
