Introduction to me :-)

Hi, my name is Hanlie and I am new to the forum.

I live in South Africa and don't have much contact with people who think like green wizards and so I'm signing up here.

Over the past 7 years I have started doing projects around the house to try and make my household more robust against decline events. Since I started we have gone through a severe drought; thank you, 5 000L water storage tank and composting toilet.

The pandemonium has badly affected our council's service delivery and I have started to fix things in the street and so on.

My technical knowledge is limited though and I would love to ask some questions here about drills, screws, plastering etc. Our house is very old and needs lots of maintenance. It's so old that it's mostly built from unbaked clay bricks.

I would also like to start a food garden but I have historically been very poor at that sort of thing so it's way down on my list of things to do.

Cheers
Hanlie

Hi Hanlie,

You learn by doing. And failing. And doing again.
Food gardening has a steep learning curve.
Or I should say, it has a steep learning curve if you want to live off only what you grow.
If you want to supplement your daily diet of rice, beans, grains, potatoes, etc. with fresh greens, herbs, and vitamin-rich veg, it's a lot easier.
Improve your soil and you'll get a better garden. Add as much organic material to your soil as you humanly can and your soil will gradually improve.
Look over the gardening posts in our forum for starters.
Good luck!

Welcome aboard. I am sure there is some one who can answer all your technical questions.

Welcome Ping/Hanlie, glad to see someone from South Africa. Anytime you feel like doing a guest blog post for the main page, let me know. I think many of us would be love a report from somewhere other than America.

One of the things too many prepper sites focus on is gardens and food. Getting ready to live in a World of Less will take people with knowledge of many things, including how to build and how to repair. There's quite a few of us, myself included who are handy people and do it yourselfers. If you have a problem vexing you, feel free to post a question. I find the more eyes on a problem, the better. There's always some one who can see the solution that the rest misses.

If you can, post pictures too. Feel free to send me an email if you have problems posting a picture. I have software and resources that make it easier, and can host resize and fix most things giving the average person difficulties, as well as a dedicated hosting account for pictures for Green Wizards. Just let me know.

Sorry, I don't spend all that much time on the internet and so my responses can look very much delayed to internet hungry eyes...

I shall post my questions in the appropriate forums so as not to keep the subjects together in one place.

As for a guest post... if something particularly interesting happens here I will gladly regale you with tales of woe ;-)

Cheers
Hanlie
