I remember these were called "Ho Chi Men" sandals in my youth (late 60s), because supposedly the Viet Cong made them and used them alot during the US-Vietnam War. I had a pair myself and while they weren't handmade, they did have tire rubber as a sole. They were lined with something so they weren't just rubber.
